Detailed Description

ICCM - Third Annual Student and Community Music Research Symposium

Date: Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st November 2017
Venue: York Hilton Hotel

The International Centre for Community Music (ICCM) at York St John University in partnership with Sound Sense will host the third annual Community Music Student Research Symposium on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 November 2017 in York, UK. In response to last year’s feedback, we are delighted to announce that this year’s symposium will be a two-day event. Through creating greater space for discussion and networking the symposium will provide a focused environment for students currently or recently engaged in community music research.

In celebration of community music today, we welcome submissions across participatory music-making contexts. The event welcomes undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctorial students and their supervisors, as well as recent graduates. Observers are also welcome. The theme for this year’s conference is ‘It ain’t what you do, it’s the way that you do it’, a nod to the synergies within process that can be extracted from the diverse nature of community music research. Submissions are welcomed from papers that resonate with the following categories:

  • Methodological and conceptual frameworks in community music research;
  • Partnerships and collaboration in community music research.

Due to the expansive nature of community music research, we will also host a ‘pick n mix’ space in this year’s symposium. This is a call for inspiring student research which does not fit into the categories identified above.

The symposium fee is £40 and will include entrance to the conference on both days, refreshments and lunch on the second day. We are in the process of confirming this year’s keynote speakers, and look forward to welcoming your research proposals into the conference programme also.

Submissions should adhere to the following format:

  • A single Word document containing an abstract of between 300-400 words;
  • 6 Keywords;
  • Short biography (150 words);
  • Institutional affiliation and current student/graduate status.

Where a ‘creative’ or ‘performative’ element is to be included in the presentation, this should be highlighted in the abstract. Please specify technical requirements (IT). It is the organisers’ intention to find ways to include as many participants as possible and with an extended programme, we are excited to be able to host an increased number of submissions.
