Vascular Assessment and Doppler Interpretation (August 2017)

Health CPD

Fee-paying attendee

Detailed Description

Increasingly, clinicians deal with patients who have complex healthcare needs, often with a range of underlying pathologies. Understanding the status of the circulation is key to developing an appropriate management strategy for every patient, and the ability to make accurate assessment of vascular status is a core skill. A good knowledge of vascular anatomy and physiology underpins all assessment, and confidence in carrying out appropriate assessment of the arterial, venous, and lymphatic systems, provides the clinician with the best opportunity to ensure identification of potentially at-risk patients. This means that timely and appropriate treatment can be provided and that the clinician is able to communicate their clinical findings to other members of the healthcare team.

This core update aims to provide clinicians with the opportunity to re-visit the relevant under-pinning anatomy and physiology, an over-view of clinical presentations within a range of commonly-encountered pathologies, and the opportunity to practise both basic and more advanced vascular assessment skills. As part of this, practical use and interpretation of Doppler ultrasound will be core to the practical sessions, together with the use of clinical tests which do not require specific equipment.

Due to the highly practical nature of the course, delegates will be encouraged to act as volunteers for colleagues, although this is not compulsory. Delegates are also encouraged to bring along their own equipment to use in the practical sessions.

  • Anatomy and physiology of vascular system (revision)
  • Vascular pathologies (including atheroma, venous stasis, heart failure, hypertension)
  • Theories underpinning assessment techniques (blood flow dynamics, Doppler shift, generation of pulse, blood pressure maintenance)
  • Practical demonstrations and practical session (including pulse palpation to popliteal level, blood pressure measurement, ankle pressure measurement, refill testing, arterial and venous patency, interpretation of Doppler waves and sounds)
