We are excited to offer a new British Sign Language course for Key Stage 2 children and their parents, grandparents, carer, or siblings to experience a BSL journey together

Detailed Description

This course will be delivered on Saturday mornings over a period of six weeks. This course will develop both the child and parent/carers basic BSL and enable the them to have a conversation in simple BSL together. The course is designed for deaf or hard of hearing children who are in Key Stage 2 (School year groups 3,4,5 and 6) to feel more confident with communicating with their family and peers.

Each parent is able to bring up to two children maximum, if you would like another adult to attend with you, this will cost an additional £50 and places can be booked here. 

Course Facilitator 

Amanda Smith is a Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) user, with experience teaching BSL for twenty two years, eighteen of which have been at York St John University.  

As an Associate Professor at York St John, she teaches on all levels of British Sign Language modules, facilitating learning for students who may never have signed a word to those who have some fluency in BSL. Including aspects of the deaf lived experience into teaching, Amanda helps to raise awareness of deaf people as a cultural as well as linguistic minority. 

In 2011, she was awarded National Teacher of the Year by Signature and, in 2012, York Adult Tutor of the Year by City of York Council’s “York 800”. In 2019 she was nominated for the ‘inspirational teaching’ and ‘most supportive staff member’ of the year awards by York St John Students' Union.

Cancellation by delegates

We appreciate that there may be occasions where you are unable to attend a CPD course and need to cancel your booking, and we aim to make the process as straight forward as possible. To cancel your place on a CPD course, workshop or other CPD event which requires payment, notice of cancellation must be given ASAP by email to [email protected]. If your course fee is paid by your organisation, then please be aware that you will need to inform your manager directly.

If you are a fee payer, you may be able to receive a refund depending on when you inform us of the cancellation:

• If you cancel more than 14 days prior to the start of the course you will receive a full refund.
• If you cancel between 7-14 days prior to the start of the course you will receive a 50% refund.
• If you cancel less than 7 days before the event you will not be entitled to a refund.

If you are unable to attend but wish to transfer the booking to someone else, you can do this up to the day before the course starts without any further cost by contacting us via email.

Cancellation by York St John University 

In some circumstances we may need to take the decision to cancel a CPD course, workshop or event. In this case all delegates will be offered a full refund, and if appropriate, be offered priority booking on any rescheduled course in the future. It may also be possible to transfer a booking to another CPD course, if appropriate.
