Detailed Description

Emergency First Aid in Football (EMFAiF) Course

Date: Monday 2nd February 2026

York St John University, Haxby Road Sports Park, YO31 8TA

About the course

The EMFAiF course aims to provide foundation knowledge to keep athletes safe in training and competition, and is aimed at those with more experience, providing trauma skills that can be called upon in emergency situations.

It’s a course that will aim to build on your prior knowledge and give you the skills to be able to assist other medical staff in more advanced immediate care in the pre-hospital environment of football.

Course prerequisites

The course is aimed at training support staff in sport to assist medical staff both in training and during competition (e.g., coaches, S&C coaches, Sports Scientists). It is also suitable for Sports Therapy students wishing to upskill their trauma skills prior to placement and undertaking higher level trauma qualifications. Sporting situations usually require a team of six to deal with a scenario effectively, with most clubs providing only one or two medical staff per event, and so it's important to have a range of first aiders for additional support.

How is the course structured?

The (EMFAiF) is a one-day course run at venues across the country. On the day you will experience a range of practical and theory, with supporting demonstrations and question and answer sessions to meet all your needs.

What are the learning outcomes?

The course will give you the knowledge to deal with life and limb threatening injuries on the field of play but it’s worth noting it won’t cover basic musculoskeletal injuries common to football. You will leave with the ability to perform a structured first aid assessment on a player and the ability to assist medical staff with more advanced management of the situation.

Content on the day will focus on:

· Emergency action planning and duty of care in football

· Primary A-E approach of the injured player

· Sudden Cardiac Arrest in football

· Basic Life Support (BLS) with use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED)

· Airway management and oxygen therapy familiarisation – assisting the medical staff

· Limb threatening fractures/ dislocations and their emergency management – assisting the medical staff

· Head injuries and The FA concussion guidelines

· Spinal injury and management inclusive of assisting the medical staff in full spinal extrication

· Medical emergencies in football

Please arrive at Main Reception, validate your car parking (if required), and one of the coaches will meet you there and direct you to the relevant area.
